Israel Offers Its Intelligence Expertise
To Customers in Many Allied Nations
Positioned at the "eye" of the stormy Middle East
region, Israel has always had to be alert, and prepared to cope
with evolving threats. Recent conflicts in Afghanistan and former
Yugoslavia underline the need for such preparedness, primarily
in the field of intelligence.
Israel relies on an ever-ready early-warning network of intelligence
collection methods, a top-class command and control network, and
highly trained troops equipped with the state-of-the-art weapon
systems, modernized and upgraded with indigenous technologies
developed continuously to confront evolving threats. That's why
other nations value the operational experience, knowhow and tactics
that Israel's Defense establishments offer its allies.
Detecting targets far from such countries' borders is the task
of early warning and surveillance radars, including those developed
by Elta Electronics Ltd, a subsidiary of Israel's largest Defense
manufacturer, Israel Aircraft Industries. Elta offers several
lines of early warning radars, including advanced phased array
radars, which are providing the basis for PHALCON, currently in
final contract negotiations for sale to India. A previous sale
of the system to China failed under U.S. pressure, two years ago.
The EL/M-2080 Green Pine missile detection radar developed for
the Arrow missile interceptor system, is a derivative of the PHALCON,
which was also selected by India for its strategic missile warning
program. Other radars designed specifically for maritime patrol,
such as EL/M-2022A-on display at the IAI pavilion here, are used
for search and rescue, submarine detection, and coastal surveillance
and defense. The system is installed on the newly modernized AP-3C
recently delivered to Australia.
Relying on passive signal surveillance techniques, by identifying
and locating the sources and characteristics of communications
and radar signals in the battlefield, Electronic Support Measures
(ESM) and Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) generate a picture of
threats depicting activities and status of enemy forces. The Australian
AP-3C is one platform integrating Elta's EL/L-8300 ESM. The system
is also used in such maritime patrol aircraft as the Gulfstream
V soon to be fielded by the Israel Air Force, and on F-50s and
C-130s operated by various users. Another ESM system is offered
by Elisra, as part of an Integrated Electronic Warfare System,
or IEWS. AES-210/E system incorporates direction finder measurement
functions and signal processing for automatic detection, identification
and location of radar signals. It is built into a compact package
fitting naval helicopters and small aircraft.
