Textron's MMLS for 'Enduring Freedom'

According to USAF sources, elements of both the USAF's Special Operations Command and USAF Europe are currently using the Honeywell Mobile Microwave Landing System in support of in-theatre deployed operations for Operation Enduring Freedom.

USAF C-130s and C-17s are the only transport types equipped to use the AN/TRN-45 MMLS system, and both are heavily involved in essential airlift tasks in several nations, including Afghanistan.

The USAF's Electronic Systems Center has confirmed that AFSOC aircraft are using their MMLS equipment to support combat missions, while the USAFE aircraft are undertaking humanitarian relief flights.

MMLS provides the same functionality as a conventional instrument landing system, but with increased accuracy. Of greater importance is the system's portability and deployability-the system can be fitted on a single standard aircraft pallet and can be set up, in any location, in just a few hours.
