Aviation Week & Space Technology's
Best-Managed to Be Recognized Today
Aviation Week & Space Technology will present its Best-Managed
Companies of 2001 awards to three aerospace outfits and four airlines
today in the Musee de l'Air et de l'Espace here at Le Bourget.
The presentation will be made at The Best-Managed Companies Awards
and Executive Symposium. The limited-seating event will kick off
at 10 a.m.
The annual recognition, now in its fourth year, goes to companies
rated against their peers on how well they spent their resources
to achieve capital-efficient growth. Aerospace companies also
are ranked on their competitiveness improvements during the last
five years.
For the first time this year, AW&ST is recognizing the best
Cargo Carrier. The winner is Federal Express, which has been beating
industry average performance measured by the rating-standards
for five years running.
In the aerospace realm, General Dynamics took the top spot for
large companies, besting last year's winner Bombardier by a narrow
margin. Elbit Systems will receive the award for the best medium-size
firm, largely because of its high operating margins. The strongest
small aerospace company this year is Herley Industries, Inc, designer
and producer of microwave and millimeter wave components.
The strongest of the global air carriers this year is Singapore
Airlines, through excellent margin performance. In the medium
airline class, Ireland's Ryanair is keeping its strong streak
alive. The company has snagged the Best-Managed Companies award
for the third straight year, now, making it the most successful
company in the Aviation Week rating system. Rounding-out the field
is SkyWest Airlines, Inc, the regional carrier for both Delta
Air Lines and United Airlines.
Rankings are compiled from fiscal 2000 results, using information
provided to Holt Value Associates, a financial consulting firm
partnered with AW&ST on the project. The other project team
member is Pricewaterhouse Coopers, the international consulting
and accounting firm.
