New Romanian Ultralight Targets Western Markets
One of the newest aircraft at the Show, the Aerostar 01, made
its debut at Le Bourget this week, having flown for the first
time on May 31. Developed by the company as part of its strategy
of extending civil aviation activities, the Aerostar 01's first
target is the Romanian Aeroclub, which is establishing an ultralight
division and could become a major user.
After that, Aerostar will promote its side-by-side two-seater
in North America, Western Europe, Australia, South-East Asia and
Eastern Europe. Customers have the option of ready-to-fly or kit
versions, the former available with standard or custom avionics
packages. Orders have already been received and will be fulfilled
immediately after certification.
Spanning 30 feet and with empty weight of 595-pounds, the Aerostar
01 has additional space for baggage or two children and a range
of 405 nmi. Maximum weight will vary according to local regulations.
An aura of déjà vu surrounds the new Romanian. Those
to whom it seems strangely familiar may wish to be reminded that
Aerostar also builds the high-wing Air Light Wild Thing (an aircraft
easily mistaken for the Murphy Rebel) for distribution through
Germany. Wings (although now attached in the low position), rear
fuselage, empennage and nose-including the 80-hp Jabiru flat-four
from Australia or an alternative Limbach engine-are all cloned
from the Wild Thing, but are attached to a new cabin of spacious
proportions.
