Fiat Gets Greena Light to Power Italy's NH 90s

FiatAvio and Agusta have signed a firm contract for the supply of T700 engines for Italy's NH 90 multi-role military helicopters. The engine deal is the first to be disclosed following the MoU for NH 90 production go-ahead, agreed last year. FiatAvio will supply an initial batch of 232 T700/T6E1 engines, plus spares, for 166 helicopters, with a final planned total of 396 engines for 196 helicopters.

The T700/T6E1 was a joint development between the original manufacturer, GE Aircraft Engines, and FiatAvio. FiatAvio is responsible for 50% of engine design and testing, and will assemble all the T700s required for Italy's NH 90s at its Brindisi plant.

Overall, Fiat will supply some 60% of the total components required by Italy's T700 engines, and a further 40% of the components destined for other T700/NH 90 customers. The first NH 90s will be delivered to Italy's Defense Administration in 2004.
