  Dime a Dozen?
Who says engines aren't a commodity? UTC president and CEO Karl Krapek recently told the European Association of Aerospace Industries that when he moved from president of air conditioning company Carrier to head Pratt & Whitney, he transitioned from overseeing products that sell for $3 a pound to $750 a pound. "Even more amazing to me was that when we factored in the huge investments in engineering (the engines) and the cost of selling the products, we sometimes made scarcely more money on a $10 million jet engine than we did on a $200 room air conditioner."
