USAF, CG Aircraft Get Passenger Smokehoods
The U.S. Air Force and Coast Guard have selected Essex passenger
smokehoods to be installed in their aircraft. The Australian and
Canadian air forces also are installing the hoods. There are some
100,000 Essex hoods installed in military aircraft around the
world, the company says.
Essex portable breathing and rescue equipment is designed to protect
flight crews and passengers form smoke and toxic fumes. The company's
hoods are used by 72% of U.S. large commercial and 86% of U.S.
Regional transport flight crews, according to Essex.
The company's PBE (protective breathing equipment) is designed
as a smokehood for flight crews, providing supplemental oxygen
and decompression protection at altitude or in smoke or toxic
environments for up to 60 minutes. The unit is FAA- and UK CAA-approved.
The company also manufactures the SCU (self-contained unit) for
passengers and military flight crew. Each unit contains its own
source of compressed oxygen. Essex's products are on display at
Hall 3, Stand D14/C.
