SACA Gets the Lead Out

Durango, Col.,-based Standard Alcohol Company of America is promoting a "higher-alcohol" fuel additive that eliminates toxic lead chemicals that have been phased out of ground vehicles but are still used in avgas. SACA's "Envirolene" is a blend of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol, hexanol, heptanol and 8-carbon octanol. It's water-soluble and biodegradable, has an octane level of 138, and can cut carbon deposits and exhaust emissions. Envirolene has been promoted primarily for ground vehicles, including diesels, but "there has been a recent and pointed increase in SACA's work with aviation fuel blends," says co-founder Mark Radosevich.
