Tucson PD's State-of-the-Art Model 206

Fort Worth's Texas Aviation Services is working to transform a Bell 206 B3 into a "state-of-the-art" law enforcement helicopter for the Tuscon police. Mods include a multifunction FLIR, Lo-Jack and ProNet, a Wulfsburg C5000 tactical radio, and a PAR engine monitoring system. With a night tactical mission requirement, the Tucson PD air unit needed a fully Night Vision Goggles (NVG) compatible helicopter, and for this reason the 206 was fabricated with an integrated instrument panel with "Shadow Glass."

The first-time helicopter installation provides white cockpit lighting for VFR operation, while still remaining NVG compatible. When transitioning from VFR to NVG, no switches or covers are required. The FLIR installation selected for this modification was the Avalex Technologies 8.4" flat plate monitor with inputs from a FLIR system 7000 with a Data 911 computer. It allows the display to be fitted with a touch-sensitive screen for full integration with ground vehicles.

Tucson's 206 was even modified for the most unthinkable of events with "Heli-Guard" ballistic protection on floors, seat bottoms, seat back and door panels. The armor added 55 pounds of weight to the airframe.
