Ground Prox Warns of Power Lines

Honeywell's second Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System (EGPWS) for helicopters is being unveiled here at Heli-Expo. The Mark XXI, aimed for those not equipped with a radio altimeter, follows the introduction at last year's show of the Mark XXII for fully-equipped helicopters. Both are targeted at the retrofit market, but some airframe manufacturers are showing an interest in installing them as standard.
Among them is Sikorsky, which expects to receive certification this month for the Mark XXII EGPWS as a standard equipment option on the S-76C+, making it the first manufacturer to do so. The EGPWS offers the same predictive terrain avoidance features as the fixed wing models, but also warns of such low altitude hazards as power lines and towers.
