Conceptual Cockpit for Helicopters?

APEX could bring flat panel displays to the lower end of the helicopter market.

Making its first appearance at Heli-Expo is Honeywell's conceptual Bendix King APEX integrated cockpit and avionics system for general aviation that promises to make instrument flying like clear-weather flying through the use of "life-like graphics." It can be seen here on Booth 1546.

"We designed this low-end avionics system for fixed wing aircraft, but we think there may be some opportunity for helicopters, too," says John Uczekaj, general manager of Honeywell's business, regional and helicopter avionics systems. "APEX uses smaller flat panel technology than Primus Epic and a simplified avionics architecture, which we think might go into the lower end of the helicopter market cost effectively."

The key to APEX is Visual Cueing and Control, which provides an "out the window"-type picture that depicts not only the distant horizon but also a life-like view of the ground passing beneath the aircraft.

APEX is not yet flying in a helicopter. "We brought it here to get feedback," said Uczekaj.
