Ultra Electronics Quiets 20th Challenger

The 20th active noise and vibration control system offered as a $182,000 option on Bombardier's Challenger 604 was sold just before EBACE by Ultra Electronics.

To date the Challenger is the only business jet with this option-not so much because it needs it, but because the large-diameter rear bulkhead, a function of the aircraft's large fuselage, can amplify low frequency energy like a drumskin.

"We don't want to imply the Challenger is noisy, but our UltraQuiet Cabin system reduces overall sound energy by about two dB, and some frequencies by far more," Ultra marketing vp Rob McDonald told Show News.

The system-comprising 32 microphones and 23 computer controlled amplifiers and shakers attached to the rear of the pressure bulkhead-can also be retrofitted, but only when the aircraft is undergoing significant maintenance.

Ultra (Booth 7457) has delivered 520 aircraft systems in six years, worth $50 million. Most do not use shakers, but loudpseakers to generate anti-noise.
