Day 2

Space and More Space at MD Helicopters

"This should send a clear message to everyone that we are here to stay," says MD Helicopters, Inc. chairman and CEO Henk Schaeken about his company's aggressive expansion work in.

The former McDonnell Douglas Helicopters has more than doubled the size of the MDHI complex in Mesa, AZ, to 131,000 square feet. The firm has begun the move to a 40,000-square-foot hangar for demonstrations, completions and training, and says a new 35,000-square-foot spare parts warehouse is nearly complete.

MDHI this past August bought the five buildings it's occupied since February 1999, as well as the large hangar.

The expanded facilities will MDHI to produce as many as 100 helicopters per year by 2002. The purchase and expansion program also completes MDHI's separation from Boeing, which spun off the helicopter operation after its merger with McDonnell. MDHI took over the business in February 1999. "The two companies have worked cooperatively ever since to complete the transition," MDHI says.
