South Africa Navy Confirms Exocet Anti-Ship
Missile
for MEKO Corvettes
Initial selection last July by the South African Navy of Matra
BAe Dynamics MM40 Exocet AShMs for its four MEKO A-200 SAN corvettes
was recently confirmed by the Pretoria government, clearing the
way for contract finalization. Integration of the firing installations
will take place in South Africa, under the supervision of African
Defense Systems. Other South African participation from substantial
industrial offsets involves technological exchanges with Kentron
on missiles, and Somchen on their propulsion. South Africa's navy
thus becomes the 33rd customer for the Exocet family, including
air-to-sea AM39s, submarine-launched SM39s, and ship/shore-launched
MM40s, of which more than 3,200 missiles have now been sold world-wide.
Their latest Block 2 configuration features advanced technology
electronics to enhance stealth, target-detection, defense penetration
and tactical versatility.
