Hot Summer for JSF Engine Team: The F120 Core
Is to Run by September
The JSF-F120 engine has successfully completed several component
rig tests, and preparations are underway to run a core engine
this summer. The Joint Strike Fighter Engine Team consists of
GE Aircraft Engines in Cincinnati, Allison Advanced Development
in Indianapolis, Rolls-Royce in Bristol, England, and Philips
Machinefabrieken of the Netherlands. It is working under a $440
million Phase 3 contract from the U.S. government covering engine
development activities through September 2004. This includes component
and subsystem testing leading to full JSF engine testing for the
airframer that wins the competition. The engine will be tested
in the various aircraft variants-short takeoff and landing, conventional
takeoff, and a carrier-capable model. AADC and GE are jointly
developing a coupled turbine system for the JSF-F120 powerplant.
It consists of an integrated, counter-rotating high- and low-pressure
turbine. Rolls Royce is providing an increased-flow, three-stage,
long-chord hollow titanium blisk fan.
