Lockheed Martin Gets Contract for Wind Corrected
Munitions Dispenser
The U.S. Defense Dept. recently awarded Lockheed Martin a $41
million contract for production of the Wind Corrected Munitions
Dispenser. It is the third and final lot of low-rate production
of the inertial measurement system-guided system. WCMD is a tailkit
that is applied to the Tactical Munitions Dispenser. The submunitions
dispensed by the WCMD are area munitions. The weapon was conceived
during the 1991 Persian Gulf War when U.S. military planners realized
the need to be able dispense area-denial weapons from high altitude,
which required a system to offset the impact of wind on the weapon.
The U.S. Air Force is planning to buy about 40,000 of the low-cost
guidance systems. Of those, 30,000 will be used in conjunction
with Combined Effects Munitions, 5,000 on Gator mines, and another
5,000 with BLU-108 Sensor Fused Weapons.
