New CFM56 will Enhance Airbus A340-300

CFM International is developing a new version of the CFM56-5C4 engine to power the new Airbus A340-300 Enhanced. The new engine, the CFM56-5C Enhanced, uses the same compressor and turbine technology as the CFM56 variants that power the latest A320 developments and the 737 Next Generation.

Use of three-dimensional aerodynamic technology in the design of the engine's blades reduces tip losses and makes the engine more efficient, allowing it to produce equal power at lower temperatures. In the CFM56-5C Enhanced, new technology will reduce fuel burn by 1% while reducing exhaust gas temperatures by 10 degrees at constant thrust levels. This reduces wear on the engine and is expected to reduce maintenance costs by as much as 10%. The engine's thrust and noise performance-claimed to be the best in its class-will not be affected.

The new engine will start tests next year. It will be offered for delivery from mid-2003. CFM will also offer an upgrade kit to existing A340 customers, providing them with the same benefits. The kit will be available from late 2003.

CFM may offer a similar upgrade kit for the CFM56-3, which powers the "Classic" 737-300 and its derivatives. It could be certified within 24 months.
