Turbomeca, China to Team on Helo Upgrades

Turbomeca and Chinese engine supplier AVIC II have agreed to collaborate on future helicopter re-engining projects.

The two companies previously worked together on equipping the Z-9, a four-ton class based on the Dauphin 2, with Turbomeca Arriel 1 engines.

A total of 110 Turbomeca engines are operating in China, including 80 Arriel 1s. Applications include the Astazou on the Gazelle helicopter, the Arriel on the Dauphin and Panther, and the Makila on the Puma.

Speaking at Farnborough 2000, Turbomeca chairman and CEO Jean-Bernard Cocheteux said the China deal underlines the company's strength in a growing market.

As far as his firm's upcoming acquisition by Snecma is concerned, Cocheteaux said that only European Community approval is needed before the deal can go through.

"Turbomeca and Microturbo (one of nine Turbomeca units) will maintain their identities and operate as before," he said.
