Boeing Doubles 777X Order Book

Boeing's 777X program got a major boost yesterday as leasing giants ILFC and GECAS confirmed plans to order 18 of the new longer-range aircraft. Japan Airlines and EVA Air of Taiwan previously had kicked-off the 777X with orders totaling 15.

Boeing also received orders for 30 777-200ERs, from the same two customers, as well as other models.

GECAS' order, which has yet to be formally signed, includes five 777X options and "purchase rights" for an additional five aircraft. In the single-aisle department it is taking 65 more 737NGs, 14 of which are exercised options, and added another 52 options for 737NGs to its Boeing order book. Aircraft covered under the agreement are scheduled for delivery as early as 2001 and extend through 2007, GECAS said. The leasing company's fleet today totals more than 1,000 airplanes.

ILFC committed to taking 25 777-200s as well as seven more 737NGs. It also placed options for two more 200s and purchase rights for five. Once this latest deal is signed, ILFC will have a total of 211 737NGs and 67 of the various 777 models on order. All told, it will have ordered 644 Boeings.
