Sikorsky S-80E Heavy-Lift Helicopters Helping Boost Turkish Defenses

Proving that it is never too late to score an export success, Sikorsky has announced the sale of eight S-80E helicopters-commercial-standard export models of the CH-53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopter-to the government of Turkey. The $350 million deal was signed in Ankara on June 6. It is the first export sale of the standard transport version of the three-engine helicopter, which made its first flight in 1974. (A version of the U.S. Navy's MH-53E mine-countermeasures helicopter was sold to Japan.) The new S-80Es will be fitted with a new avionics system developed by Rockwell Collins, which is also being offered for advanced versions of the Black Hawk family. The cockpit will feature large-format flat-panel displays.
