CFM95-3 Endurance Test Completed

CFM International has completed an endurance test for its CFM95-3 turbofan engine designed to improve the fuel system's performance and life.

The 95-hour test run involved a modification kit that includes a three-dimensional high-pressure compressor aerodynamics upgrade and turbine improvements.

"The demonstration tests showed that there are no technical limitations to this program," CFM International said, adding that all pre-test objectives were met.

The specific fuel consumption of the CFM56-3 would be improved 1% by the upgrade, with longer component life and up to 50% lower scrap and repair costs, the company believes. Among the turbine changes being considered are modifications to the nozzle, blade, shroud materials and cooling.

The market potential for the upgrade is being assessed. It could be certified within 24 months of launch.
