Honeywell to Supply LAAS Systems to Frankfurt,
Memphis and Seattle
Three more airports are slated to get Honeywell SLS-3000 local
area augmentation system ground stations, also known as a ground-based
augmentation system. They are to be installed at Frankfurt-am-Main
in Germany, as well as at the Memphis, Tennessee and Seattle-Tacoma
airports. The system provides differential global positioning
system navigation and allows for Category I precision approaches.
The Memphis installation was made possible by the teaming of Honeywell
with FedEx, which will use the facility as a certification base
to allow it to start local area augmentation system at various
U.S. airports. "Our SLS-3000 LAAS ground station enables
the design of complex approaches and other flight procedures that
minimize delays, flight time, airspace required for landing and
noise impacts on airport neighborhoods," said Ed Wheeler,
VP and general manager for Honeywell's airport systems. By early
2002, Honeywell hopes to have full public use authority for its
SLS-3000 system. A limited private use authority already has been
granted.
