DESIGN & OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS FROM MISHAP DATA ANALYSIS

In this compelling keynote session, Colonel Pete Mapes shares significant findings from studies of all severe rotary wing mishaps in the U.S. Department of Defense from 1985 thru 2005. Analyzing over 900 mishaps involving loss of life, severe injury or damage in excess of $200,000, the studies focus on shared denominators and stratified analysis of mishaps by phase of flight, airframe, flight conditions, morbidity & mortality data and much more. Reviewing both aircrew human factor and non-human factor causes, this work provides key insights directed at improving survival and decreasing mishap rates. Using epidemiological methodologies, the authors are able to provide a comprehensive picture of the most important requirements for preventing military accidents, maximizing survivability and ensuring safe flight operations.
  • Colonel Pete Mapes, USAF, MC, CFS; Office of the Deputy Undersecretary of Defense for Readiness; Readiness Programming and Assessment
