| 8:45 a.m. | KEYNOTE "Reshaping Defense Acquisition" With new leaders in place, the Defense Dept. is working a number of critical issues simultaneously -- the Quadrennial Defense Review, new budgeting priorities, and new operational issues around the globe. How systems will be acquired and what systems are most critical to a Defense capability short on people and money lead the issues that will be discussed by the new OSD/AT&L Director of Industrial Policy.
| 9:30 a.m. | Technology Requirements - Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency In addition to new military leaders, the Defense Dept. also has a new technological leader at DARPA. She will discuss the priorities and requirements on developing technologies in an environment where exotic is "out" and return on investment is "in".

| 10:15 a.m. | BREAK sponsored by Dassault Systemes |
| 10:30 a.m. | Clearing the Air – FAA Sets Plans for Future Amid the talk of a bad economy, renewed energy is being placed on assuring that the nation has the infrastructure required for the economy of tomorrow. The highways in the sky – air and cargo transport – are an important ingredient to that infrastructure. In this session, the FAA’s operations leader will provide an overview of priorities and issues to be dealt with in the coming 18 months.
| 11:15 a.m. | Networking Luncheon sponsored by CSC |
| 1:15 p.m. | Top Aerospace & Defense Programs Despite an economy that has left us reeling, the aerospace and defense sector continues to represent one of the nation's drivers in import/export, innovation and better than a trillion dollars of opportunity. Conference registrants will receive a preview of adjusted 10-year production levels for major programs across every aerospace and defense sector, provided by Forecast International. This panel will then provide analysis of the volatilities and the opportunities for businesses throughout the supply chain.

| 8:45 a.m. | Airbus Shifts from Design to Produce High production rates for existing aircraft families and challenges as new platforms move into production are the focus for the Airbus team. The European OEM has a list of requirements – from the supply chain and for technology insertion.
Reprogramming Future Combat Systems The Defense Dept. is realigning technologies to shift from what has been termed “exotic” to focus on the systems that will deliver what the front line warfighters need to operate across multiple fronts, facing multiple threats. Now, how does that impact some of our largest program efforts?
| 9:45 a.m. | Global Air Transport Strategies While orders for aircraft may be in a financing lull at the moment, there’s tremendous growth on the horizon, led by a requirements for thousands of new aircraft across Asia. In this session we’ll hear more about the opportunity, how key aircraft manufacturers are preparing, and new entrants to the mix.
The F-35 – This Generation The fifth generation fighter is where the Defense Dept. is placing its focus in terms of warfighting focus. As the fighter moves into production, while also focusing on design of variants, there are steep requirements for a global supply chain.
| 10:45 | Break | |
| 11:00 a.m. | Next Generation ATM In or Out, the next generation of air traffic management is a critical component in the nation’s infrastructure. Here are key updates on how this program is moving forward and how it will be implemented over the next two years.
Unmanned Systems A major portion of the Defense budget is allocated on gathering information through the use of unmanned systems. This growing segment involves platforms large and small, many with high rate production on the scale of piece parts. Here’s what’s needed, technologies in the works, and a forecast for the next 18 months.
| 12:00 p.m. | Program Excellence Banquet Sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers More than 60 programs were selected for nomination for the 2009 AVIATION WEEK Program Excellence Awards. The annual luncheon spotlights the finalists and announces the winners for this year's awards for those leading programs that respond to the most challenging issues facing transportation, space exploration, security and defense.
| 1:30 p.m. | Innovation: Delegating/Leaning of Engineering in Complex Design Development The time required by a far-flung global team to develop and design new systems is a key factor in the success of that program. And while the tools are available, the "how to" remains a key area where program teams can make tremendous gains. In this session we'll look at how organizations are delegating design/development tasking across the program team and applying the continuous process improvement process required to avoid some of the mis-steps seen over the past decade.
| 2:30 p.m. | Manufacturing: the 21st Century Version Making stuff is what we do, but the technologies used to manufacture systems has advanced significantly in the past five years. In this session we'll look at how the emerging manufacturing systems are benefiting some of the high-rate programs and some of the trends that will impact manufacturing during the coming decade.
| 3:30 p.m. | It's a Global Thing: Supply Chain Integration Whether it’s a new air transport platform or a key defense system, our programs rely on global alliances of businesses large and small. In reviewing any one of these programs, it’s evident that managing the supply chain across time zones, a wide range of capabilities and technologies is one of the major obstacles to success. In this session, we’ll hear from a non-A&D business, IBM, that has rated among the top five supply chain organizations every year that AMR Research has rated supply chains, and a space sector organization that has made supply chain integration a core capability in its Perfect Order approach, as well as from an A&D.

AVIATION WEEK will offer two tracks on this final day of the 2009 conference: Program Leadership Excellence and Supply Chain Excellence. The Program Excellence seminar will focus on development of program and project leadership skills and capabilities, based on expert presentations and case studies. The Supply Chain Excellence will use AVIATION WEEK'S interactive model to present information and identify actions to create improvement across the program or project supply chain. The agenda for Program Excellence is a schedule of best practices and case studies identified as part of the 2009 AVIATION WEEK Program Excellence Initiative. Presenters will be announced the first week of September. The sessions were identified as part of the Program Excellence Evaluation Team's analysis of program strengths and weaknesses across the industry. |
