Fiscal 2003 Supplemental Request Includes $3.7 Billion For Munitions

Mar 26, 2003

The Bush Administration's fiscal 2003 supplemental appropriations request contains $3.7 billion for munitions, $1.1 billion for military procurement and research and development, and $1.7 billion for classified defense programs, according to documents sent to Congress March 25.

The munitions funding would replenish stocks the military has depleted or expects to draw on for operations in Iraq, Afghanistan or elsewhere. Candidates for funding include the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile, Javelin missile, Joint Standoff Weapon (JSOW), Laser Guided Bomb (LGB), Patriot missile and TOW missile (Tube Launched, Optically Tracked, Wire Guided), the documents say.

Bomb bodies, rockets and other conventional armaments also could be funded from the munitions account.

The funds for procurement and R&D would pay for "critical requirements" in Iraq, including targeting devices, spare parts and equipment for command and control, communications, intelligence, and detection of biological and chemical agents, the request says.
