The target of a hostile takeover by Ireland-based rival Ryanair, Aer Lingus in 2007 executed a complete turnaround. It posted $163-million net earnings, reversing the previous year's $88-million loss. During the year its Airbus fleet grew from 35 to 41 aircraft. It opened a new base in Northern Ireland and added 14 European routes plus three to the U.S. Revenues increased 15.2% as passenger traffic rose 7.8%. Unit costs excluding fuel declined 1.2%. Ryanair owns a 29.3% stake in the flag carrier and is disputing a European Union decision against its acquiring the Irish flag carrier.
