FedEx Unveils New Main-deck Fire Suppression System
FedEx Express reports that it has developed a cargo fire-suppression system (FSS) that is effective even against Class D fires ((high-temperature fires caused by combustible materials) and will install the system on 74 over-water aircraft.

The system, developed over seven years, is installed on airplane's main deck. It senses a fire and extinguishes it by piercing the affected container and injecting fire-suppression agent, much like the Snozzle used on airport and municipal fire trucks.

FedEx reports that its FSS will be installed on its 59 MD-11s by early 2011. It also will be installed on the company's new Boeing 777s, which began arriving last month and will enter service early next year. Installation takes 700 man-hours per aircraft, the company says.
