Manpower Shortage
The problem of finding enough qualified mechanics and engineers came up again today at the MRO Conference here in Fort Lauderdale. While most people seem to be in agreement there is a growing problem, Don Wetekam, group VP for MRO at AAR Corp., said he thinks there are more effiencies that can realized that will lower the number of qualified personnel that are really needed. He also said that it's not just a recruiting problem, but a retention problem.

Dear Frank
Recently, the Beacon Council Aviation Committee which I chair, conducted a survey amongst Miami's aviation companies. the highlights of this survey are:
MRO's in S. Florida are expanding. 36% expect to expand their facilities in 2008 and add an average of 16 employess.
although salaries are stagnant, 56% reported hourly rates of $15-30 per hour.
when asked what is the number one obstacle to growth, the most popular answers were lack of workforce and high cost of living (which prevents relocation to S. Florida).
we are expanding this survey in the coming weeks and if you have an interest would be happy to share our results with you and your readers.
Sincerely
Aviv Tzur.
