When Pope Benedict XVI visits Austria this weekend, he will be protected and looked after by 1,350 soldiers and 50 aircraft and helicopters of the country's armed forces, the Austrian defense ministry says.
The head of the Catholic church will be flown from Vienna to Mariazell on an air force Sikorsky Blackhawk chopper which will feature a specially-prepared and decorated seat for the distinguished passenger.

Throughout the three-day visit and particularly during the helicopter transits, the heavens above will be secured by Northrop Grumman F-5E air defense fighters of the Austrian air force.

Medical evacuation helicopters, medical teams and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) laboratory and rescue personnel will be on standby in case of an emergency.
Says defense minister Norbert Darabos: "The safety of the Pope has the highest priority."
