ScanEagle Flies Off Mk V Special Forces Craft

U.S. Navy special operations forces have for the first time launched a Boeing ScanEagle tactical unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) from a MK V naval special warfare boat.

The event took place earlier this month in very calm seas off the coast of San Clemente Island, California, some 66 naut.mi. west of San Diego.

Now this is a true gem. In this new brave world of UAVs, the Scaneagle is a revolutionary system - because it actually works. Right now. No need for complex parachutes or landing gear and with one heck of an endurance for such a small craft, it is something that can be launched and recovered without the need for complex infrastructure like runways or nets, just a pole with a wire for it to snag on. It's affordable, deployable and relatively simple to operate, and gives the warfighter a true over-the-horizon eye in the sky.
