The U.K.'s PAAMS(S) missile defense system is about to undergo end-to-end testing.
The Longbow platform to be used for the trials has arrived in France at the Toulon naval base, in preparation for testing firings to take place at the French missile launch test center near the Ile du Levant in the Mediterranean. Testing is to commence before mid-2008 and conclude in 2009.

MBDA is the prime contractor for PAAMS, the Principal Anti-Air Missile System being installed on British Type 45 destroyers. The U.K. version employs the BAE Systems Sampson multi-function radar.
France and Italy are also using a version of PAAMS on their Horizon and Orizzonte frigates, but with the Empar radar. Their system is designated PAAMS(E).
The PAAMS interceptors are the Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles already tested as part of the Franco-Italian SAMP/T project, the ground-based equivalent of PAAMS.
MBDA notes that with PAAMS equipment delivered to the first Type 45 destroyer, the HMS Daring, deliveries of equipment have now started to the second vessel of the type, the HMS Dauntless.
Next year also is shaping up to be critical for U.S. missile defense efforts. Read more about those in the Dec. 3 issue of Aviation Week & Space Technology.
