A Defense Technology Blog
Getcha 40 Virgins Here

For the sake of its potential pilots, if nothing else, I hope the "new Iranian fighter" discussed on the Iran Defense Forum is somebody's idea of a leg-pull.

Two AAMs, what looks like a 50-cal Gatling behind a tiny radar, the inlets located over strakes so that both engines will blow out if anyone attempts to pull g, enormous V-tails - "the invention of the devil," as my favorite aerodynamicist calls them - designed for minimal effect and maximum radar cross section...

How will this aircraft fare against any professional fighter aircraft? Ares can exclusively direct you to a high-fidelity simulation here.

Memo to Iran, too - the more straightforward V-tailed F-5 demoed a few years ago won't do any better. The F-5 was a neat design, for 1956.

Please ask your favorite aerodynamicist, what's wrong with the so-called v-tails? Then tell us.
