Not Blowing Things Up
European missile manufacturer MBDA may be more accustomed to putting weaponry together, but on this occasion it is pitching to take apart almost 50,000 rockets.

The company is bidding to secure business from the British and French Defense Ministries to de-militarize a total of 49,000 MLRS rockets fitted with sub-munitions, 27,000 from the UK, and 22,000 from France.

As a result of the 2008 Oslo accord on cluster munitions London and Paris are considering how to ‘demil’ their respective stocks of the sub-munitions variant of the MLRS.

Rather than the traditional – and far less environmentally friendly  - approach of pretty much just blowing the rounds up in a controlled fashion in the great outdoors, MBDA is proposing to use a high temperature furnace to deal with the propellant and explosives.

The company is planning to establish a dedicated facility at its Bourges-Subdray site in France if it wins the work.
