Guns In Airports? Who Knew?

I am a law-and-order kind of girl.  My sister is a cop, and we both learned how to shoot guns at an early age.  I would not be afraid to use one if the need arose.

But I can't for the life of me understand why some people feel the need to bring their guns to the airport. An Associated Press survey found that seven of the top 20 busiest airports -- Philadelphia, Detroit, Phoenix, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles and San Francisco -- let people carry their guns in the areas before security.

I applauded Hartsfield-Jackson GM Ben DeCosta when he stood firm and made it clear that guns would not be allowed in his airport despite a Georgia law that went into effect in July expanding places where people could carry guns.  And frankly, I was disappointed when the Transportation Security Administration -- whose middle name is security -- spokesman said his agency had not taken a position on guns in airports.

Maybe I'm missing something.  Please -- drop me a note or make a comment to explain why you think people need to carry a gun in pre-security areas of the airport.

Lawbreaking bad guys already have guns in airports.

So in airports, as in other public spaces, it comes down to whether you trust law-abiding citizens to be armed as well. 'Cause police can't be everywhere, and you only have to die once to have a bad day.

That's the short version.

Why do people need to carry a gun to the mall, to work, or to church? Personally, I don't have a good answer--but whatever answer people may have, the same applies for non-sterile areas of airports.

I don't see any more/less risk allowing law-abiding gun owners to carry a weapon in airports relative to any other public facility. I'm not saying there is/isn't risk, just that airports are no different than any other place.
