Washington Post sees Woerth and Herbert battling for FAA job

The Washington Post has weighed in again on the speculation about who the next FAA head could be. The Post believes Sen. Harry Reid's aide Robert Herbert and former pilots' union head Duane Woerth are the frontrunners -- which this blog has already noted (here and here, for example). The story also picks Boeing's Neil Planzer as a dark horse. They've essentially got it right, although they should have also listed top House Transportation Committee aide Clay Foushee.

Meanwhile... the speculation remains wide-open for Obama's Transportation Secretary pick. One name has been added to the long list of candidates -- former Dallas mayor and Obama confidante Ron Kirk (however, he's also been linked with other posts or even a Senate run). With the speed at which other appointments are being made, the DOT selection should not be too far away. Air Transport Association head James May believes a pick will be made by Christmas. Most still believe Jane Garvey and Steve Heminger are the frontrunners.

Herbert is the clear choice to head the FAA.

Considering the vast amount, the majority, of negative comment generated on other aviation, news media blogs and peer reviews about Mr. Woerth, his past leadership failures and the resounding implications if selected as FAA Chief, Mr. Herbert brings true leadership, aviation expertise and a clear and concise management style to the table.

I have known Mr. Herbert for over twenty years. I have witnessed his rise through the military and his uncanny ability to resolve administrative issues, his capacity as an arbitration expert for employee union issues as well as his expertise as a military aviator.

He possesses all the leadership, tenacity to resolve issues and skill sets necessary for this important post. Herbert's successful history of working with the military, civilian and veteran's community through the auspices of Sen. Reid (NV) as well as his extensive military background place him well above Mr. Woerth on every level.
