787 - Countdown to first flight. Part 29
The words “first flight” are being heard every day now amongst the 787 flight test team as they plow through final gauntlet work. Last night the team completed checks of the lateral control, rudder and elevators, and today (June 16) expects to undertake the hydraulic systems check for first flight.

Following completion of the avionics tests, the second 787, ZA002 has also moved to the flight line to begin fuel testing. Painted up in the livery of the launch airline ANA, ZA002, the aircraft was immediately filled with fuel for the four-hour system verification ground test.Reports circulating at Paris also point to a potential June 30 target date for first flight. Flightblogger reports on the background to this here. Given the on-going pace of tests, it still seems more than possible to me that Boeing will beat this target – though with flight testing nothing is certain and, as the company continually reminds us – safety will not be compromised to meet arbitrary targets.
