Standing-Room-Only Seats: The Photos
Earlier this month, in this Aviation Daily subscriber-only story, I wrote about an effort by China's Spring Airlines to convince other low-cost carriers to support its interest in redesigning Airbus A320 aircraft for “standing seats.” Spring first talked about this idea publicly in June, but its talk at the Low-Cost Airlines Conference in Barcelona showed that it really has given this some thought. The presentation, for example, included diagrams and photos of three potenital standing seat options. I've posted those diagrams and photos below, and you can see the airline's entire presentation here (Adobe Acrobat file). It still is difficult to take this idea seriously, nor does it look particularly appealing, but China does have a potentially massive market and stranger things have happened.

No need to serve drinks or make PA's, and the pile of bodies will keep warm without aircraft heating. Upon landing, lay the passengers out in the rain on the ramp until they wake up. By that time, the checked luggage may be ready for pickup.
