Darpa's High Altitude Endurance unmanned air vehicle program had two elements: the "workhorse" Tier II Plus Global Hawk and the stealthy Tier III Minus DarkStar. Built by Lockheed Martin and Boeing, and designed to fly for more than 8 hours at just over 45,000 ft., the RQ-3 DarkStar flew in 1996. The first of two prototypes crashed, and the program was cancelled in 1999. (Photo: Lockheed Martin)
