Under ARPA contract, Lockheed developed a quiet night surveillance aircraft, the QT-1, by adding a muffled engine and slow-turning propeller to a Schweizer sailplane. This led to the improved QT-2. which flew in 1967 and was used operationally in Vietnam. The QT-2 was developed into the YO-3A Quiet Star, one of which was acquired and restored by NASA in 1978 for acoustics research. (Photo: NASA Dryden Research Center)
