Building on the X-45 unmanned combat air vehicle demonstration, Darpa in 2002 launched the Unmanned Combat Armed Rotorcraft (UCAR) program to develop a survivable rotary-wing UAV capable of collaborating autonomously with other manned and unmanned helicopters. Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman designed flight demonstrators and conducted successful ground demonstrations, but the UCAR program was terminated in 2005, when the U.S. Army withdrew its support.
