Under the High Altitude Endurance program, the contract to develop the Tier II Plus Global Hawk unmanned air vehicle was awarded to Teledyne Ryan (later Northrop Grumman) in 1995. Designed to fly for up to 42 hours at altitudes up to 65,000 ft., the RQ-4 Global Hawk first flew in 1998. In 2001, the demonstrators were rushed into service in Afghanistan.
