Responsive Access Small Cargo Affordable Launch (Rascal) was a program to orbit small satellites at short notice and low cost by launching them from an aircraft that would take off from a runway, zoom-climb to the edge of the atmosphere, release an upper stage, then return to a runway landing and be ready to fly again in 24 hours. Space Launch and Scaled Composites were working on Rascal when it was canceled in 2005. (Photo: Darpa/Space Launch)
