One of Darpa's most ambitious programs, Force Application and Launch from CONUS (Falcon) began in 2003 as an effort to demonstrate a prompt global strike capability using a small expendable launch vehicle in the near term (2010) and reusable hypersonic cruise vehicle (HCV) in the long term (2025). The HCV would carry a 12,000-lb. payload 9,000 nm. in less than 2 hours. Falcon prime contractor Lockheed Martin Skunk Work plans to launch two unpowered, expendable hypersonic test vehicles in 2009. A powered, reusable demonstrator, the HTV-3X, has become the Blackswift. (Photo: Lockheed Martin)
