Flying The Gulfstream G650
At Aero India in Bangalore (Feb. 6-10) Boeing P-8 India program manager, Leland Wright, said that Indian air force pilots assigned to the P-8 are being sent to the U.S. for training at the behest of the Indian Government, which wrote into the contract that Indian air force P-8 pilots do training in the U.S. But he says U.S. law stipulates that pilots wishing to fly in commercial air space with a 737-800, or similar aircraft such as the P-8, must have a commercial pilot’s license. As a consequence, all the Indian air force P-8 pilots are ending up with a U.S. commercial pilot’s license recognized by the FAA, he says. That is a great deal for the pilots but the problem is it makes it very easy for the military pilots to leave and get a job in the commercial airline industry.
