Bombardier has posted video of the take-off of the CSeries for its first flight, just before 10am local time here at Mirabel, near Montreal. As I post, FTV1 is still in the air, for a flight that could last up to 2.5 hours if all the test points are met.Video: Bombardier
The take-off was remarkable for its lack of drama, largely because of the aircraft's extraordinary quietness - thanks to its Pratt & Whitney PW1500G geared turbofan. That must be a relief to Porter Airlines, which is counting on that quietness to overturn a 30-year-old ban on flying jets from its Toroto downtown airport hub.
There are a few other customers, existing and potential - particularly for the smaller CS100 variant - that are betting on the CSeries's combination of low noise and long range from short fields to enable new services between constrained airports such as Billy Bishop Toronto City and London City Airports.
