Harro Ranter's stellar Aviation Safety Network Tuesday released its traditional first-day-of-the-year snapshot of airline safety from the previous year, and the figures--albeit aggregate numbers, as opposed to more insightful accident rates--are impressive when put in perspective.

ASN put the 2012 worldwide fatal airliner (in ASN-ese, aircraft capable of carrying at least 12 in a passenger configuration) accident total at 23, resulting in 511 fatalities, including 36 killed on the ground. ASN's rolling 10-year annual averages for the those figures: 34 accidents and 773 deaths.

In addition, ASN's database puts 2012 as having the fewest number of passenger flight accidents--11--since 1945.

This being the Internet age and all, ASN has an infographic on the year in airliner safety. For those that still prefer their data in analyzable chunks, ASN's database is doubtless the more rewarding click.
