After 10 years of gestation, this small, yet futuristic V-tailed pusher-prop began pre-flight fast taxying trials at Bagotville, Canada, in July. Initially based in France, Cobalt Aircraft Industries was formed in 2007 to take the Co50 to production, first setting out its stall at the EAA’s AirVenture Oshkosh in 2010, when a full-scale mockup was shown. Now, its center of operations is Saguenay, Québec, from where production aircraft will flow, once certification has been achieved in about 2014.
It is Cobalt’s intention to provide the world with its first high-performance, five-seat, composites-built, certified canard and to take away some of the market share currently enjoyed by Cirrus and the Cessna Corvalis. “Intentions to purchase” exceed 1,000 for the $650,000 machine, prospective customers coming from the realms of both business and private aviation.
With a 350 hp. turbocharged Continental TSIOF-550 flat-six and Hartzell three-blade, constant-speed prop, the Valkyrie offers its riders a 220 kt. cruising speed and a typical range (four adults and a child) of 600 nm. plus 45 minutes – 1,500 nm. with one-up. Just announced is the selection of Esterline CMC Electronics SmartDeck twin-screen EFIS as primary avionics, including synthetic vision.
