Flying The Gulfstream G650
Certified in Europe during the 1980s, but never placed in production, the Seastar has spent the time since its NBAA 2008 relaunch seeking finance and a North American manufacturing base. Hailed as “the only purpose-designed amphibious aircraft of the last 50 years,” this push-pull PT6A turboprop-powered twin was designed by Claudius, son of the Dornier. Grandson Conrado is current company chairman, last seen in search of $100 million from potential backers as far away as India. Production will not begin until adequate funds are secured, he avows. The first Seastar was due to have emerged last year, cost being $6 million at 2009 levels. Standard seating is nine, but the Seastar will carry 12 and two crew over 212 nm. at 180 kt.
