The Dutch parliament yesterday approved reinforcements of NATO's Operation Ocean Shield counterpiracy mission while delaying a decision to expand the EU's parallel Operation Atalanta until after parliamentary elections in September.

The Dutch reinforcements of Operation Ocean Shield include a second Cougar helicopter, an unmanned aerial vehicle and a diesel submarine to increase reconnaissance capabilities. They will depart for the Horn of Africa with the amphibious transport ship Hr. Ms. Rotterdam with two Cougars and a special Royal Netherlands Marine unit on board, the latter for boarding and hostage rescue missions.

Operation Ocean Shield's current flagship is the Royal Netherlands Navy (RNN) LCF air defense and command frigate Hr. Ms. Evertsen. Since 6 June, the operation has been commanded by RNN Commodore Ben Bekkering.
