Just in time for the U.S. aerospace and defense industry to institutionalize its drive for seeking more foreign military and direct-commercial sales abroad in coming years, the Justice Department has issued an unprecedented explanation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.

But now companies listed in the U.S. can turn to a 120-page “guide” that in the eyes of officials and lawyers around the capital serves as “the most-thorough review” of what not to do, according to one law firm representative. “There may be no other area of the law where DOJ or SEC has provided the public with as much information about our enforcement approach and priorities,” justice officials echoed last week in announcing the guide.

Recently, Transparency International U.K. estimated that the global cost of corruption in the defense sector now amounts to at least $20 billion annually.
